What Is A Binge Eating Disorder?

Binge eating disorder (BED) is characterized by recurrent episodes of compulsive overeating, often to the point of discomfort. People with BED can feel like their eating is out of control at times. They may continue to overeat even when full and may eat when not physically hungry.

Signs that you may have a binge eating disorder include:

  • Eating unusually large amounts of food in short periods
  • Eating faster than normal until uncomfortably full
  • Eating when not physically hungry
  • Eating alone out of embarrassment over the quantity of food
  • Feeling disgusted, depressed, or guilty after overeating
  • Weight fluctuations up and down

This disorder can take both a physical and emotional toll. It can lead to weight gain and obesity over time or weight fluctuations, increasing the risks for high blood pressure, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.

People with BED also commonly struggle with anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem related to their eating patterns and body weight.

The good news is that treatments are available, including both therapy and medications to help regulate appetite. If you recognize signs of BED in yourself, the first step is to contact us, and let’s set up a consultation. We can assess if you meet diagnostic criteria and develop a customized treatment plan to help overcome binge eating urges.

Our Medical Weight Loss Treatment

Led by Dr. Randy Warner, our medical weight loss program utilizes FDA-approved medications that have been clinically shown to assist with weight loss and maintenance when combined with lifestyle changes. Medications we may prescribe can include:

  • Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) – Approved for binge eating disorder and ADHD, Vyvanse has over a decade of data showing its safety and efficacy for long-term use. The generic version is now available, called lisdexamfetamine.
  • Wellbutrin (bupropion) – An antidepressant that can also be used off-label to control appetite and assist with weight loss efforts.
  • Topamax (topiramate) – Mainly used to prevent seizures, this medicine has the side effect of weight loss in many people.

In addition to medication, Dr. Warner may recommend lifestyle changes like improving nutrition, increasing activity levels, addressing stress, minimizing screen time, and more based on each patient’s needs. He recognizes that underlying issues like anxiety, depression, and binge eating disorder can negatively impact weight, so psychiatric treatment is often incorporated if appropriate.

Our goal is to develop customized binge eating disorder treatment plans to help each patient lose excess fat in a healthy, sustainable way – while minimizing the frustrating weight cycling that often happens with temporary dieting. We accept most major insurance plans.
